What is the objective of this campaign and what does the project consist of?

My name is Ketty Ortega and I am secretary of the Ministry of Economic and Social Inclusion (MIES) in the Galapagos Office. I live in San Cristóbal, one of the Galapagos Islands. Nineteen years ago I was a single mother and since then I have worked to help other mothers both in my old city and now in Galapagos, I have had the opportunity to meet many brave women and I have been involved in them as I could from my home (with my official salary and other income). Being a single mother is a huge and often lonely responsibility.

At this time, brave women from my hometown of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, San Cristóbal, need our help. Since the spread of the coronavirus, many members of their families have lost their jobs and subsequently their sources of income. They need urgent assistance to cover basic needs such as soap, disinfectant, medicines and rent, all of them essential to protect their families from the virus. Many are forced to cultivate their own gardens to supplement the diet. Furthermore, many landlords are evicting these mothers despite the dangerous situation. Tourism from the United States was once the main employer on my island. Now we need help.

This project aims to provide financial assistance to 15 families in my neighborhood who have lost their livelihoods due to the pandemic. The money will be divided equally among these families to buy food first and then pay the rent. These families are the poorest and the closest to my heart. However, if we exceed the fundraising goal, I will be able to increase the number of families helped. Galapagos depends on cash to operate. Therefore the money will be withdrawn from my bank on the island and delivered directly in a cash payment to these families. Due to our remote location, I will not be able to offer any reward for donations. But my gratitude is very great.

Mi nombre es Ketty Ortega y soy secretaria del Ministerio de Inclusión Económica y Social (MIES) en la Oficina de Galápagos. Vivo en San Cristóbal, una de las Islas Galápagos. Hace diecinueve años era madre soltera y desde entonces he trabajado para ayudar a otras madres tanto en mi ciudad vieja como ahora en Galápagos, he tenido la oportunidad de conocer a muchas mujeres valientes y me he involucrado en ellas como pude desde mi casa (con mi salario oficial y otros ingresos). Ser madre soltera es una responsabilidad enorme y, a menudo, solitaria.

En este momento, mujeres valientes de mi ciudad natal de Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, San Cristóbal, necesitan nuestra ayuda. Desde la propagación del coronavirus, muchos miembros de sus familias han perdido sus trabajos y posteriormente sus fuentes de ingresos. Necesitan asistencia urgente para cubrir necesidades básicas como jabón, desinfectante, medicinas y alquiler, todos ellos imprescindibles para proteger a sus familias del virus. Muchos se ven obligados a cultivar sus propios jardines para complementar la dieta. Además, muchos propietarios están desalojando a estas madres a pesar de la peligrosa situación. El turismo de los Estados Unidos fue una vez el principal empleador en mi isla. Ahora necesitamos ayuda.

Este proyecto tiene como objetivo brindar asistencia financiera a 15 familias en mi vecindario que han perdido sus medios de vida debido a la pandemia. El dinero se dividirá en partes iguales entre estas familias para comprar alimentos primero y luego pagar el alquiler. Estas familias son las más pobres y las más cercanas a mi corazón. Sin embargo, si superamos la meta de recaudación de fondos, podré aumentar el número de familias ayudadas. Galápagos depende del efectivo para operar. Why do we need the money, and what will we invest it in?

Mothers urgently need resources to buy basic supplies and food for their families. Donations will go directly to help those most in need.

What will we do with donations if we do not reach the goal?

We hope to reach the goal but even if we do not, any help we can get is very important.

What will we do with donations if we exceed the stated goal?

If we exceed the goal, we will be able to pay the rents of and assist additional mothers.

Due to our remote location, and lack of flights it is difficult to ship supplies directly to us. Monetary donations are the best way to help now.
