¿Quienes somos?

Somos Galo, María Cristina, Daniela, Valentina, Galo Andrés, Andrea y Bernardo. Somos una familia ecuatoriana, vivimos actualmente en Quito. De diferentes edades, profesiones e intereses, no me detengo a detallar cada uno, para no hacerlo muy largo. Somos una familia que hace tiempo sentimos que queremos vivir con propósito. 

Valentina, quien les habla en el video, es nuestra [email protected] e hija. De ella nació la idea de ayudar a esta escuela, tras vivir sus experiencias como voluntaria en Kenya.

Who are we?

Our names are Galo, María Cristina (parents), Daniela, Valentina, Galo Andrés, Andrea and Bernardo. We are an Ecuadorian family, living in Quito. Although we are in many different walks of life, different ages with different professions and interests, for some time now we have felt the need to live a larger purpose as a family, ultimately to serve those most in need. 

Valentina, the girl talking in the video, is our youngest girl in the family. Her experience in Kenya, Africa has sparked a passion in her to help these kids at a local school that is in need of resources and restoration.

¿Cuál es nuestra trayectoria?

A lo largo de nuestra vida como familia, hemos tenido la oportunidad de organizar y participar en eventos de labor social en nuestro país, con mucha y con poca gente de distintas partes del Ecuador. Experiencias inolvidables, sonrisas imborrables y la satisfacción de saber que estas poniendo un pequeño grano de arena para el beneficio de alguien más.  No hemos realizado antes un proyecto de la magnitud de este, pero ahora es la oportunidad de hacerlo y siempre se empieza por un primer paso. 

Contándoles un poco nuestra trayectoria personal, dentro de la familia tenemos profesionales que se han preparado nacional e internacionalmente.  Está Bernardo y Andrea, Bioconstructor y Arquitecta respectivamente, quienes han trabajado y se han preparado durante años en Arquitectura Sustentable y Bioconstrucción. Está Daniela, Psicóloga Clínica, que ha trabajado con la comunidad ecuatoriana en varias circunstancias; con adultos, con niños, con grupos vulnerables; en situaciones de desastre, en centros de ayuda, entre otros. Todos enfocados en generar un impacto positivo en la sociedad. 

What is our trajectory?

Throughout our lives as a family we have had the opportunity to organize and participate in social work events in our country, with many and few people from various parts of Ecuador. Unforgettable experiences, smiles, and the pure joy of planting something so small, that blooms big and fruitfully in the lives of others is what drives us as a family to continue serving.  We have never dedicated ourselves to a project as big as this one, but we are confident in taking this next step. ´

A project of this kind calls for people with various skill backgrounds, therefore we would like to inform you of some of our capacities within the project. First, there is Bernardo and Andrea, who work as Architects and Bioconstructors, and who have been in the field for many years. Then there is Daniela, a Clinical Psychologist who has had much experience working within the Ecuadorian community. She has served a variety of age groups including  adults and children, while managing a variety of circumstances such as, vulnerable groups, situations of disaster, help centers, and others. The shared skill sets have the potential to generate a positive impact within society, and more specifically, to serve the people in Kenya.

¿Por qué organizamos esta campaña?

Vivir en la comunidad y compartir con los niños en Kenya ha causado un gran impacto en Valentina. Despertó en ella el deseo de generar un cambio en la vida de los niños y sus familias, mejorando su ambiente de estudio. Esto nos transmitió a nosotros e hizo que toda la familia quiera hacerlo.

Why the campaign?

Valentina’s experience living within the Kenyan community and interacting with the children have caused a big impact on her. A strong desire awoke in her, to establish a positive change in the lives of the children, specifically in their learning environment. Her desires of the heart to serve the community soon became ours as well.

¿Cuál es el objetivo de esta campaña?

El objetivo de esta campaña es recaudar fondos con la ayuda de todos ustedes, para restaurar ciertas partes de la escuela Ugary Primary School en Kenya y proveer a los niños y profesores de elementos que son indispensables para su educación.

What is the objective of the campaign?

The objective of this campaign is to raise funds with the help of generous donors in order to restore certain areas within the school (Ugary Primary School in Kenya). We hope to provide resources for the teachers and students that are basic for a good education.

¿En qué invertiremos las donaciones que reunámos? ¿Qué haremos con el dinero si no alcanzamos la meta? ¿Qué haremos con el dinero si superamos la meta?

Hemos trabajado en equipo con las autoridades de la escuela, hemos recolectado información e interactuado con los niños y profesores para determinar cuáles son las prioridades. Como resultado hemos hecho una planificación detallada de los proyectos que se llevarán a cabo, entre ellos: restauración de pisos y techos de las aulas, construcción de bancas y escritorios para los niños, abastecimiento de material escolar, restauración de los baños, entre otros. 

La ayuda que la escuela necesita no tiene límite, si obtenemos más dinero del planificado, se seguirá invirtiendo en los proyectos que continúan en la lista. Si no logramos obtener la cantidad de dinero que pusimos como meta, se realizarán los proyectos que alcancen con el monto recaudado, por orden de prioridad. 

How will we spend the donations? What will we do with the money if we do not reach the goal? What will we do with the surplus of donations once we reach our proposed goals? 

We have worked as a team with the head of the school, collecting information and interacting with children and teachers to determine what their priorities are in terms of resources. As a result, we have created a detailed list of the projects we hope to accomplish: restoration of floors and roofs of the classrooms, construction of benches and desks for the students, providing school supplies, restoration of the bathrooms, and more. 

There truly is no limit to the amount of support, materially and constructively speaking, that this school could use. Therefore, we will use the donations, starting from the most prioritized need on the list and continuing down. If we do not receive the amount of donations needed to complete what we determined as all of our goals, we will accomplish what we can according to priority.

¿Cómo nos aseguraremos de que el dinero sea manejado correctamente?  

En Marzo viajaremos a Kenya toda la familia para coordinar y planificar en equipo con la comunidad y concretar el inicio del proyecto. Una vez que hayamos recolectado el dinero, Andrea y Bernardo volverán a Kenya y se quedarán allí el tiempo que tome la ejecución del proyecto, con el fin de colaborar, coordinar y supervisar del proceso. 

How will we make sure that the money will be spent correctly?

We will travel to Kenya as a family during the month of March, working with the community in order to coordinate and plan as a team, and to establish the beginning of the project.  Once we collect the donations, Andrea and Bernardo will return to Kenya and stay there as long as it takes to complete the project. Their roles will include collaborating, coordinating, and supervising the project.

¿Por qué necesitamos el apoyo de la comunidad?

Este es un proyecto de gran magnitud, solos no podríamos lograrlo. La unión hace la fuerza y la unión de muchos corazones, genera cambios. Queremos invitarles a que miren las necesidades de cada uno de estos niños, de cada familia que representan, y  el toque de color que podríamos dar a su futuro.  

Tal vez muchos de ustedes se pregunten por qué no estamos haciendo este proyecto en el Ecuador, siendo un país con tanta necesidad. Una vez más les invitamos a que miren desde otra perspectiva, que vean que esto no se trata de nacionalidad, se trata de una vida humana. No importa de dónde seamos, en qué país nacimos o en qué parte del mundo estemos, cambiar una vida vale lo mismo y merece la pena en todas partes. 

Esta vez, como familia sentimos que era momento de regresar a ver a un grupo humano que ha sufrido desmedidamente a través de su historia y que en la actualidad sigue siendo uno de los grupos más vulnerables y necesitados.

Why do we need support from the community? 

This is a big project, we would not be able to complete the project without collaborating with the community itself. Working together will create the strength needed to change hearts, the strength needed to uplift a community in need. We want to invite you to observe the necessities presented by each and every one of these children, and their families, with the hope of truly understanding the positive impact we can create in their lives going forward. 

Some of you may be asking yourselves, why is this project not being pursued in Ecuador, considering we are also a country that could benefit from a social project? We encourage you to look at the situation from another perspective, understanding that it’s not about nationality, it’s about human beings. It doesn’t matter where we are from, where we are born, or where we live, changing a life has the same value across the globe. 

As a family, we reflected on the reality of a group of people who have suffered disproportionately throughout their history, and that in actuality, they are still one of the most vulnerable groups in the world.
