WHO ARE WE?
Somos un grupo de Montuvios y Afro-ecuatorianos juntando artistas para el "IV Festival Afro-Montuvio" en Calceta, Manabí. Este festival busca celebrar la ancestralidad Africana y Montuvia en la costa norte del Ecuador.
We are a group of Montuvios and Afro-Ecuadoreans uniting artists for the fourth Afro-Montuvio Festival in Calceta, Manabi. Our festival celebrates the African and Montuvio ancestries in the northern coast of Ecuador.
Frente a las restricciones necesarias para evitar contagios de COVID-19, muchos artistas afines al festival se han visto afectados a no poder ejercer su profesión como solían hacerlo: en las calles, las plazas, los teatros, y los festivales.
Faced with an array of new precautions and restrictions necessary to prevent the transmission of Covid 19, many of the artists who participate in our festival have had to make a change from doing business as usual- in the streets, in the plazas and theaters, and in the festivals of the past.
Por razones de la pandemia tendremos que realizar el festival de manera diferente este año, en un formato virtual y semi-presencial.
Due to these same conditions stemming from the global pandemic, we will have to take a new approach to our festival plans this year and present it in a low-occupancy format, mixed with virtual presentations.
¿En qué se usarán las donaciones?
WHERE WILL MY DONATION GO?
Nuestro festival es sin fines de lucro y todos los ingresos de las donaciones serán usadas para facilitar el viaje, logística, remuneración de los artistas, materiales de construcción para el funcionamiento del festival, y recursos para incentivar el comercio de productos de artesanos conectados al festival.
Our festival is not profit-driven. All funds received through your donation will go towards facilitating travel and pay for the artists, logistics and planning of performances, and construction/building materials that make the festival possible. Funds will also be invested in resources to boost commerce for the artisans featured in our festival!
WHY SHOULD I DONATE?
Al donar al festival apoyaras la reproducción de nuestras culturas y apoyaras artesanos vinculados al festival. La necesidad de reducir las aglomeraciones de personas y reducir el riesgo de contagios nos obliga a separar las actuaciones en tiempos diferentes. Esto conlleva mayores gastos en cuanto a transporte y alimentación para artistas y voluntarios.
Your donation will directly support artisans participating in the Afro-Montuvio festival. Your donation will also support the legacy and preservation of our Afro-Ecuadorian and Montuvio cultures. Now that we find ourselves dealing with limited occupancy and prevention of contagion, we are forced to break up and spread out the different segments of our festival. With these responsibilities comes a significant increase in expenses related to providing food and transportation to artists and festival volunteers.
Ambas culturas, Montuvia y Afro-ecuatoriana, están bajo una constante amenaza de asimilación a meros artefactos folclóricos para el consumo masivo de la sociedad. Este proceso de asimilación toma la amplia gama de expresiones culturales de nuestros pueblos y los reduce a estereotipos estériles listos para encajar a lo que la sociedad determina como "cultural" o no.
Both Afro-Ecuadorean and Montuvio cultures exist under constant existential threat from greater society: more and more we are forced to assimilate, our ways of life caricaturized and morphed into mere folkoric artifacts, suitable for mass consumption. This process of assimilation threatens to distill our rich and extensive forms of cultural expression into sterilized stereotypes, making outsiders and tourists feel empowered to cherry-pick from it and become the arbiters of what is or isn’t “cultural.” Your donation helps us create a space to push back against this homogenization.
Al festival lo hemos dividido en varios fines de semana previos a la fecha del 28 de Noviembre, comenzando desde finales de Septiembre. Serán 4 fines de semanas en los cuales recibiremos a una agrupación artística más un artista individual quienes nos acompañaran a intervenciones artísticas en zonas rurales y urbanas cercanas a la Casa Cultural Experimental Montuvia en Calceta, Manabí.
We’ve divided the festival into several weekends, beginning late September and leading up to the 28th of November. There will be four weekends wherein we will host one artist group plus one individual artist, who will travel with us to put on artistic events in rural and urban areas near and around the Casa Cultural Experimental Montuvia in Calceta, Manabi.
Durante estas intervenciones grabaremos las presentaciones y las interacciones con el público (talleres, conversatorios, intercambios) mientras mantenemos las reglas de sanidad necesarias, y al final de Noviembre presentaremos las grabaciones por plataformas virtuales como Zoom y Facebook Live. Tu donación traerá el arte a más personas y beneficiará a comunidades rurales que en su mayoría no suelen tener acceso a estas tecnologías.
During these encounters we’ll be recording presentations and interactions with the public (workshops, discussions, and exchanges) while maintaining all the necessary health and safety precautions to prevent the spread of Covid 19. It’s a huge job! At the end of November, we’ll publish these recordings on our virtual platforms- like Zoom and Facebook live. Your donation will bring ancestral art to a wider range of people and will benefit rural communities who don’t have access to technology to transmit live.

Todos los incentivos provienen de la mano de artesanos cercanos al festival. Todos nuestros artesanos están comprometidos a la creación de piezas con materiales orgánicos y sostenibles, todos hechos a mano y con una larga linea de tradición ancestral. Al donar no solo apoyas al festival pero también a personas con grandes habilidades que este año han sido afectados económicamente por la pandemia. All of the material incentives offered to donors come directly from the hands of artisans near and dear to the Afro Montuvio festival. All of our artisans are committed to the creation of arts and goods from organic and sustainable materials and sources- all handmade and descended from a long line of ancestral traditions. Your donation not only supports this festival but also highly-skilled artists whose live have been economically rattled by the global pandemic. WHAT HAPPENS TO THE MONEY IF WE DON’T REACH OUR GOAL????
Si no alcanzamos la meta, los fondos recolectados serán usados para lo que se pueda dentro de las necesidades del festival de este año, tendremos que reducir la cantidad de artistas que puedan participar y limitar el número de presentaciones y talleres. Básicamente hacer lo que podamos con lo que nos alcanza!
All funds collected will be used to cover as much of this year’s festival expenses as possible. We’ll have to reduce the number of artists we invite to participate and limit the number of presentations and workshops on offer if we don’t reach our funding goal. TL/DR- We’re gonna do whatever we can with whatever we get!
WHAT HAPPENS TO THE MONEY IF WE EXCEED OUR GOAL?
Any funds exceeding our goal will be used to start a reserve fund for future festivals, and also to increase the number of acts in festivals to come!

*Important notes on our perks:
*Siendo las recompensas productos artesanales, serán creados al terminar la campaña y entregados dentro del tiempo que demoren en construirse. Hemos incluido fotos de ejemplos de los productos, pero cada producto es único y con variaciones (como todo producto artesanal). Te contactaremos con información de cuando será entregada tu recompensa (por ejemplo, un llavero se confecciona el mismo día, pero un sombrero fino demora un mes).
*Our perks are artisanal products. They’ll be created at the end of this fundraising campaign and distributed at a time appropriate to allow for their creation. We’ve included examples of the products in our photo gallery- but each one will be made by hand, unique, containing its own special character. We will contact you with information about when you should look for your perk’s arrival- keeping in mind, for example, that whereas a keychain can be made in a day, a fine straw hat takes at least a month to create. We thank you for your patience!
* Recompensas en el Ecuador serán entregadas personalmente en los centros urbanos más grandes (Portoviejo, Guayaquil, Quito, Cuenca, Muisne) Si vives lejos de estos lugares, te contactáremos para coordinar. Las recompensas en Ecuador se entregará a partir de la fecha 12/20/2020 (o más, dependiendo de la recompensa).
*Perks local to Ecuador will be distributed personally in the country’s largest urban centers (Portoviejo, Guayaquil, Quito, Cuenca, and Muisne.) If you live far from one of these areas we will contact you to coordinate a hand-off. These perks will be distributed on and after 12/20/2020, and the time it takes to get everything out depends on the item in question and its production time.
* Las recompensas internacionales solo aplican para Estados Unidos, y serán entregadas en el 2021 cuando uno de nuestros organizadores viaje para USA. Pero si nos invitas a Cambodia, Vietnam o Japón, no nos enojamos :)
*International Perks are only available for folks in the USA at this time. They will be delivered at some point in 2021 when one of our organizing team is able to travel there. THAT SAID if you want to bring us to Cambodia, Vietnam, or Japan, we won’t be mad about it.
